Friendship hospitals on water using satellite to work e-health platforms
Friendship's floating hospitals have been brought under a satellite network to ensure “quality” health service in remote river islands in Bangladesh.

The NGO introduced the concept of providing health care using ships over a decade back, and now manages between 200,000 and 250,000 patients a month in villages of 11 districts along the river banks.

“We are going to deploy this (satellite) not to increase the number of patients, but to ensure quality services,” Friendship Executive Director Runa Khan said at a press briefing on Saturday.

In a first of its kind, the NGO would deploy maritime VSATs on its three floating hospitals which would be inter-connected with the centres on the ground.  An ‘e-health’ platform would be created.
Khan, who is also the founder of this NGO, said many patients cannot follow up after  treatment in these floating hospitals. The specialist doctors both local and foreign also go back to their workplaces.

“Now we can follow those patients, no matter where the doctor remains,” she said. “The floating hospital will be able to connect to a doctor in anywhere”.

She said their hospitals were deployed in such a place where even mobile networks fluctuate. “Now with satellite on all ships we’ll remain connected”.

“Our aim is to give quality solution to the poor,” she said.

The NGO developed this project with the help of Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES.

The Luxembourg government is funding them for this project. Bangladesh’s Square Informatix is proving technical support.

The project will be officially launched on Mar 2, Friendship says.
