No ‘large-scale danger’ in income inequality: Muhith
Finance Minister AMA Muhith has opined that income inequality will not cause any large scale danger even though it has been considered as one of the major problems in nation’s economy.

The minister made his observation at a pre-budget discussion with the Economic Reporters Forum on Sunday.

AMA Muhith also opined that the rate of extreme poverty has been on the decline as government took safety programs earlier.

“Income inequality is increasing, no doubt. But you should look at the other point. A significant portion of our income growth is sliding downwards,” he said.

He also added “That’s why, you see, extreme poverty will definitely be below two digits by the end of this year. Now it is around 11.”

Muhith also made a remark on the credit went to the government for the decline in the number of ultra-poor people owing to the attainment of over 6 percent GDP growth over the past few years.

“What I think is that income inequality will rise to some extent. But we are alert enough to see to it that it does not get to a level where divide, social problems, revolts will characterise it,” he said on this regard.

According to the government, Bangladesh’s per capita income has risen to $1,314.

But recent reports show that inequality between income groups is rising, with some particular classes deriving benefits from the rise.
