Muhith to brief media on Bangladesh Bank heist Tuesday
Amidst criticism over stolen Bangladesh Bank funds, Finance Minister AMA Muhith is going to brief the media on Tuesday.

The minister will speak in details at a media conference at 11am, his Private Secretary SM Jakaria Huq told reporters on Monday evening.

Before the announcement of the media call, Bank and Financial Institutions Division Secretary M Aslam Alam and Additional Secretary Gokul Chand Das met the finance minister.

A cyber heist on Feb 4 led to more than $80 million stolen from the central bank’s account in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York that was wire-transferred to bank accounts in the Philippines.

It came to light after Philippine Daily Inquirer ran a report on Feb 29, where it said the country’s authorities were investigating a money laundering incident involving Bangladeshi funds wired from the US.

The heist is being described as the biggest cyber theft in the world.

The finance minister only learnt of the matter from media reports almost a month after the incident though Bangladesh Bank officials were aware as soon as the funds had been transferred.

Muhith on Sunday said Bangladesh Bank will face action for ‘having the audacity to not inform the government’ about the heist.

The finance minister also said he will issue a statement after meeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Later, Muhith told reporters he discussed the matter with the prime minister but was waiting for central bank Governor Atiur Rahman to retun from abroad.

Atiur came back in the afternoon and reporters gathered at the finance ministry, hearing that Atiur was coming to meet Muhith.

He did not come until the announcement of the media conference.
