Staff Correspondent: Islami Chhatra Shibir activists at the Chittagong College have attacked activists of the Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Shibir is the student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami, the party which had sided with Pakistan during the 1971 war.
A clash erupted between the two groups of students after which police had to fire in the air to disperse them.
BCL activists were attacked while they were holding a rally after paying homage at the Shaheed Minar on the college campus marking Victory Day, said police.
Chawkbazar Police Station OC Aziz Uddin told bdnews24.com that a clash erupted between the two groups of students after the attack around 12pm.
Witnesses said Shibir activists hurled two crude bombs on the BCL rally when a fracas broke out and the two groups started to throw brickbats at each other.
A huge number of police personnel were deployed as soon as the clash was reported.
Locals said tension has gripped in the area after the clash as Shibir activists took position on the campus while BCL activists were on the street just outside the main entrance of the college.
