According to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the government intends to divert attention from Bangladesh Bank cyber heist and Tonu murder by arresting Shafik Rehman.
The arrest proves that the government is suffering from nervousness, he said.
Fakhrul camp up with the remark while addressing a programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday.
He claimed that the reports mentioned senior journalist Shafik Rehman and Amar Desh acting editor were not involved with the “conspiracy” of abduction of Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The government earlier ran repressive activities against BNP but now it started to torture the senior journalists like The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam who faces several cases, Fakhrul added.
Noted journalist and former editor of the daily Jaijaidin Shafik Rehman was arrested and put on a five-day remand on charge of plotting to abduct and kill prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The case was filed by DB Inspector Fazlur Rahman with the Paltan police in August, 2015. The inspector had named BNP’s cultural wing JaSaS Vice-President Mohammad Ullah Mamun and a number of unidentified BNP leaders.
A US court sentenced JaSaS leader Mamun’s son Rizve Ahmed Caesar on March 4, 2015 for his involvement in bribery scheme to obtain confidential information from a former FBI special agent in New York.
