Only Awami League candidates submit nominations in 13 Union Parishads on 2nd phase
Awami League candidates face no contestants in 13 Union Parishads (UPs) in the second phase of polls on Mar 31.

In the first phase, Awami League candidates, in the fray with the ‘boat’ symbol, were elected uncontested in 60 of the 750 UPs.

BNP leaders have alleged that its candidates were being prevented from filing their nomination papers, but Awami League leaders claim the BNP is short of contestants.

The submission of nomination papers for the second phase ended on Wednesday.

Election Commission Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam told reporters on Thursday that, in the second phase, 3,108 candidates had submitted their nomination papers for chairmen’s posts in 644 Union Parishads.

Of them, 1,555 had been nominated by altogether 15 political parties.

The BNP has not nominated any candidate in 58 UPs.

Following the party’s allegations in the first phase, the EC arranged for more than one place to register nomination papers for the second phase.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed has said candidates, in the third phase, would be able to submit nomination papers online.

After a meeting with law-enforcing agencies on Thursday, the CEC said the technical aspects of online submission were being sorted out.
