Anti Corruption Commission keeping eye on Bangladesh Bank heist
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has said it is keeping an eye on last month’s cyber heist involving the Bangladesh central bank and the New York Fed.

Iqbal Mahmood, newly appointed Chairman of ACC, spoke to reporters on his first day at ACC after a discussion with ACC officials and journalists on Monday.

He said, “Bangladesh Bank and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are working on the heist. We are also keeping an eye on it.”

Last month’s heist has created a ripple throughout the world, even though the incident came to light in Bangladesh only a few days ago.

Filipino newspaper Daily Inquirer had reported already last month that Bangladesh Bank funds were transferred from its account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York into bank accounts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka using the Bangladesh Bank's SWIFT code.

The Bangladesh Bank also admitted that $81 million from the Bangladesh account of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York had been shifted to the Philippines and another $20 million to Sri Lanka.

Former senior secretary Iqbal Mahmood replaced ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman on Mar 10. The commission also made former district judge AFM Aminul Islam a commissioner.

The new chairman expressed his determination to establish the ACC as a facilitated service-providing organisation with public orientation.

Media reports in the past have shown that some of ACC officials were also involved in extortion and corruption.

Mahmood said, “I will try to remove all corruption from ACC. It is true that the commission has bureaucratic complications. I will try to remove that as well.”

New commissioner AFM Aminul Islam said, “Society has corruption at its core. We need to fight corruption through unity.”
